Civil War
War, Gunshots & Grapeshot
During the English Civil War, St John’s wasn’t just a place of peace. The tower was used to store gunpowder, and lead was stripped from the roof to make musket balls. You can still spot over 20 grape shot dents in the east wall - fired from a cannon during battle. Look for them under the clock between 2 and 3 metres from the ground - scars of a turbulent past.
