Anthem
O come, ye servants of the Lord,
and praise His holy name
From early morn to setting sun,
His might on earth proclaim.
His laws are just, and glad the heart:
He makes His mercies known.
Ye princes come, ye people too,
and bow before His throne.
About the Anthem
Christopher Tye (c.1505–1572) was Informator Choristarum - master of the choristers - at Ely Cathedral for over twenty years, and one of the leading English composers of the mid-Tudor period. Under Edward VI he set the Acts of the Apostles as simple metrical verse, part of a wider Reformation effort to give congregations scripture they could sing in their own language rather than Latin. “O come, ye servants of the Lord” belongs to that same plain, direct style: a short, hymn-like anthem built from clear four-part harmony, designed to be immediately singable and to carry its words - rather than its music - to the front of the listener’s attention.
